Seeds of Style

By: Allie Sutherland

Several of this season’s resort collections have tackled the botanical trend innovatively, and despite first impressions, Moschino was no exception.  Commencing with crisp coats and jackets in black and white with dashes of red all over, the subtle sprinkling of ruffles and rose colors were seeds that spawned into rosy motifs and prints. Culminating with fully floral standout pieces, Moschino’s stylistic germination in its runway display was true to its efflorescent inspiration.

Richard Nicoll Resort 2014

By: Michael Johnson

For resort Richard Nicoll brought us a collection of ultra cool, downtown wears. One of the main materials used was a shiny synthetic. It was a subversive comment on tacky, in turn making it look cool. The same goes for the snake prints, ideally the print would come off as over the top, but the way it was used and executed it quickly showed to be pleasing to the eye. His intention was to take ideas associated with tacky or in bad taste, and elevate it to a more elegant and cool level. He achieved his goal with flying colors. All the offerings were hot on the money in terms of desirability. The clothes felt effortlessly chic. There is a very effective marriage between the ease of sportswear and the elegance of technique including materials.

Thom Browne Resort 2014

Thom Browne is the master of tailoring. Having established himself in menswear with his unique take on bespoke, womenswear was naturally the next step. The female counterpart to the Thom Browne man is a woman of confidence. She carries a reminiscent echo of a mid-century silhouette, nipped in waits and full skirt. Although it is a very feminine look, the intent was to empower women in celebration of their femininity, expressed in the exaggerated curves of the female body. It makes perfect sense that Browne would look to this point in fashion history, his woman has it all together. For resort he once again gave us a quirky take on the female form. The theme for resort was a look at the inner workings of tailor-mades. The typical lining fabrics were now the face of the garments. Another detail that enhanced this focus was the intentional spider web effect of pulled threads at raw edges. Some seams were pressed open on the outside of the garments as well. The offerings felt classic and timeless, characteristics enhanced by the silhouette. The stand out piece was a coat-dress that bared some skin on the back die to gill-like slits, simple yet unique detail. Browne has showed to be very good at keeping loyal to his vision while still being able to develop it season after season.
